Wisdom Teeth Removal Schedule an appointment at Oral Surgery Specialists of Buda if you are concerned about wisdom teeth removal. If you are having problems, we can provide you with an assessment about whether extraction of your wisdom teeth is the best option. What are Wisdom Teeth?Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to emerge. There are four in total, and they are positioned at the corners at the back of the mouth, at both ends of each arch of teeth. Essential for chewing up the foods consumed in early human diets, wisdom teeth are no longer needed with modern-day diets where food is softened by cooking and crushed or cut with utensils. Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed? If your wisdom teeth emerged and are not causing any pain, discomfort, or health problems, there is no reason to consider having them removed. However, if your wisdom teeth have come through at an angle or have not come through at all (impacted) then you may want to have an examination by one of our dentists to check that there are no problems, or likely to be any in the future. Wisdom teeth that are crooked are often difficult to clean every surface effectively, which could potentially provide the ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive. This may lead to tooth decay and gum disease, both of which will have detrimental effects on your oral health requiring intervention from a dentist at some point. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, they have, essentially, become stuck. While they may not be causing you any discomfort or pain, they may be pushing neighboring teeth out of the way, which may then be an issue for your bite as this will eventually affect all of your teeth as they jostle for space in your overcrowded mouth. What is the Procedure for Wisdom Teeth Removal?Wisdom tooth removal is generally carried out by an oral surgeon. It can be performed as an out-patient in a dental office, but if all four wisdom teeth are being removed you may be referred to a hospital where a general anesthetic may be used. In a dental office, wisdom teeth are typically extracted with a local anesthetic, which numbs the soft tissues around the tooth. The procedure is pain-free, but if you are anxious about the procedure some form of conscious sedation can be given. The procedure may require that an incision is made in the gum, and the tooth socket widened by rocking the tooth back and forth, which loosens the tooth. The tooth can be removed using forceps once it is loose enough. If the tooth is too big to remove safely in one piece, it will have to be cut up and the pieces removed individually. Once all of the wisdom teeth are extracted, the site is cleaned and the wound stitched closed using dissolving stitches. A gauze pad is placed over the site to stem bleeding and help form a blood clot. The wound may bleed for up to 24 hours after the extraction until a blood clot has formed. You will need to be careful not to consume hot food or drinks, limit your diet to foods that do not need chewing, and when you are brushing and flossing so that you do not disturb the blood clot, which is an essential part of the healing process providing a protective cover over the wound.
