What Is Dental Trauma?

Dental trauma is typically sustained as a result of an accident or sports injury. It can include damage to the teeth and injury to the soft tissues of the mouth, as well as damage to the bone that holds the teeth (the alveolar bone).

Injury to the teeth may be minor, such as small chips, or it may include complete loss of a tooth. More serious injuries may include bone fractures and deep lacerations to gums, lips, or other soft tissues in the mouth. Dental trauma may need management by several specialists, including periodontists, endodontists, and oral surgeons.

How Is Dental Trauma Treated?

The treatment required for dental trauma varies depending on what injuries or damage has been caused. Very often, an emergency visit to the dentist will involve treatment to make the patient comfortable and stabilize the injury. After that, the patient may be referred if specialist treatment is required. Some of the situations that may arise in a dental trauma include:

A Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth has been completely knocked out it is a race against time to save it. You will need to see a dentist within 40 minutes, as after that the chances of saving the tooth start to diminish significantly.

Avoid holding the knocked-out tooth by the root and if it has fallen to the ground and is dirty, clean it with your saliva. If you can, place the tooth back in its socket, or hold it carefully in your mouth between your lower gums and cheek. It is important to keep the tooth root moist, but do not place it in drinking water. We will be able to stabilize the tooth with a splint, and after a few weeks, the tooth ligament will reattach to the jawbone, after which you will need a root canal treatment to complete your tooth's rehabilitation.

Dislodged Tooth

If the tooth is still in its socket but has been dislodged, we may be able to splint it to stabilize it. A root canal will later be required to remove damaged nerves.

Damaged Tooth

If your tooth is damaged by a chip or fracture, a filling or crown should be sufficient to strengthen it and improve the look of it cosmetically. If the cusps (pointed surfaces) on the back of the teeth are damaged, you may require a root canal.

Soft Tissue Injuries and Fractured Jaw

If you have sustained soft tissue injuries or a fractured jaw the expertise of an oral surgeon may be required. Treatments may vary, from suturing wounds to surgical repair, and temporary immobilization of a fractured or displaced jaw.
