Benefits of Dental Implants

A patient holds a model of teeth with a single dental implant, while discussing implant benefits with his dentist.Contact Oral Surgery Specialists of Buda to find out about the benefits of dental implants and the improvements they bring. Whether you have lost one or all of your teeth, dental implants provide a natural-looking, long-lasting replacement that will last a lifetime if you look after them.

A dental implant takes the place of a tooth root to provide a secure restoration that mimics a natural tooth. The implant is inserted directly into the jawbone where it fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration. After a period of three months or so, depending on your healing process, the implant will be strong enough to affix the tooth restoration (crown) on top to complete the procedure. This provides a restoration that looks, feels, and acts exactly like a natural tooth.

Several dental implants may also be placed to replace a row of missing teeth with an implant-supported bridge. They can replace a complete arch of teeth in the upper or lower jaw using innovations such as the All-on-4® or an implant-supported denture.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental Implants are Permanent

Some tooth replacement options, such as dentures, need to be removed at night for cleaning and to give the gums and soft tissues in your mouth a break from the friction they cause. Dental implants are permanent. Therefore, you do not need to worry about removing and soaking them at night. You will take care of them as you do your natural teeth with regular twice-daily brushing and flossing.

Dental Implants Do Not Slip or Fall Out

Denture wearers may have a problem with loose, ill-fitting dentures that slip, slide, and even fall out. Patients that wear traditional dentures find they have to adapt their diet and even their activities in order to minimize any movement of the dentures and avoid the embarrassment of them falling out.

Dental Implants Prevent Bone Loss

One of the major benefits of dental implants is that they are actually beneficial to dental health. When a tooth is removed, the bone socket surrounding the tooth root begins to resorb. Within a year, up to 25 percent of the bone is lost, which continues unless remedial action is taken. Replacing a tooth immediately with a dental implant prevents bone resorption. Furthermore, it helps to keep the bone tissue healthy by stimulating new growth which maintains its firmness.

Implants Help Retain Facial Structure

Teeth support the facial tissues and when teeth are lost the face begins to sag, eventually taking on a sunken, aging appearance. Dental implants maintain the underlying support that the face needs to maintain a fuller and more youthful appearance.

Dental Implants Are a Long-term Solution

Other tooth restoration options, including bridges and dentures, have limited longevity of between approximately five to 10 years before they need replacing. Dental implants can potentially last a lifetime as long as you clean them as recommended and supplement your home care routine with regular dental health check-ups.

Dental Implants Are Predictable

Dental implants have an excellent success record and are considered to be very reliable. Combined with their longevity they are a more predictable treatment than other dental procedures, including dentures, root canals, and bridges.
